Raising Money for Medical Causes

Life is unexpected and we don’t know what lays ahead of us in the next moment. Most of the times we are going about leading our normal lives when an incident occurs and the normalcy is taken out of our lives. It could be anything for that matter – a major accident, a close family member falling critically ill or something unexpected. Most times we don’t have any backup plans and we just land up dealing with these scenarios as and when and if they do arise. However, when it comes to unexpected medical expenses, sometimes insurance and income help. But what if both are not present?

Why is Fund Raising Needed?

First, let’s consider and understand a couple of scenarios when the unexpected medical expenses arise and how dealing with them gets a little difficult. Imagine a happily married couple that is expecting a baby. Everything seems fine and normal in the beginning. All of a sudden much before the pregnancy term has been completed, some complications are encountered and the baby is born prematurely. Or maybe the child is born with some rare disease. Due to this, both the parents have to take an unpaid leave from their job and stay by the child’s bedside the whole day.

Other than the hospital and medicines costs, what adds on to this is the cost of the different specialist that visit the baby from time to time, i.e., pediatrician, speech therapist, surgeons and so on. With the parents on unpaid leaves, it becomes extremely difficult to afford the cost of the treatment, which is essential for the baby’s survival. In such cases is when funds need to be arranged so that the child’s life can be changed. Also, this is not a hypothetical situation; there have been instances where such things have happened and with the assistance from the hospital, the parents managed to arrange the funds and the child’s life was saved. Not only that, the child is hale and hearty today and doing great.

Crowd Funding as a Fund Raising Option

Now the question arises is how do we arrange funds in cases like these? The fundraising can be used for the below mentioned medical –

  • Heart Attack or Stroke Patients and Families
  • Health Insurance
  • Cancer Treatment, Awareness, & Research
  • End-of-Life Costs
  • Doctor’s Bills
  • Children’s Medical Costs

There are multiple fundraising options, out of which Crowdfunding is probably the best possible fundraiser option for medical costs and expenses. So how does crowdfunding work? Crowdfunding helps individuals by helping them to raise money through an online donation page. It is a very economical option and very simple to use. You can create a crowdfunding campaign, which allows people, including family members and strangers to donate to the cause. Additionally, through the crowdfunding option, you can keep people, who have contributed, updated on the status of the medical treatment and how the recovery of the affected person is coming along.

There are some basic steps involved to start your crowdfunding campaign –

  1. Select a crowdfunding platform like KickStarter.
  2. Set a fundraising goal.
  3. Create your crowdfunding page.
  4. Begin your campaign.
  5. Promote your campaign.

This is the probably the easiest options to start and create and promote and even keeping the contributors updated on the same.

There are other options also that can be used for fundraising like

  • Organize a Bake Sale
  • Have a cook-off fundraiser
  • Garage Sale or a used book sale
  • Walkathons and many other options.

Saving a Life

Sometimes medical expenses are unplanned and at times fundraising is the only possible option, especially when it’s the matter of saving a life. And in comes crowdfunding, this is the easiest and probably the most reliable when it comes to raising funds. Also, the system makes it very transparent for even the contributors to monitor the progress of the treatment and how the recovery is going about for that matter. That makes it possible for even strangers to believe the cause and contribute freely.

Raising Funds for Breast Cancer

Breast Cancer – one of the diseases plaguing the modern world today. There are many people who have been affected by this disease. Some of the affected patients have recovered and some just never had the chance. There are some people who go through the treatment, get cured and see a relapse. Breast Cancer and its treatment itself take a toll on an individual and her family. Once the cancer is detected, the journey of treatment for the individual begins. If the cancer is detected at Stage 0, then the patient can be fairly optimistic that they will recover. If the cancer is detected in stage 1, there is 86% probability of recovery. At stage 3, the recovery chances drop to 57% and at stage 4, the survival rate is only 20%. Dealing with the treatment and the probability of not being able to recover should be enough for the person affected to handle. In addition to this, comes the cost of the treatment and the post care after the treatment. There are many cancer foundations that work on helping cancer patients to deal with the cost of the treatment or providing the treatments at an affordable rate. These treatments also work with cancer research institutes to help develop cures for cancer so that the survival rate can be increased. For all this to work, finally the questions that arise are about the funds that need to made available.

Raising funds for Breast Cancer

There are people who definitely contribute selflessly for such causes. Additionally, even at our level we can try and contribute even whatever small amounts we can gather to help eradicate cancer. October is celebrated as the

“National Breast Awareness Month”. This is probably the best time that you can start thinking about and executing ideas for raising funds for breast cancer. You don’t have to invest in organizing a gala event for raising funds. This can be done in small ways by organizing different events in our neighborhood or at our workplace. Cancer treatment can take a toll on the overall health and the well being of the person. Loss of hair on the head completely is one of the common side effects of cancer treatment. However, there are many saloons, which tie up with cancer charities so that wigs can be created for the cancer patients. This is as simple as walking into your favorite saloon and telling them that you need a haircut. All you need to do is ensure that the saloon has tied up for such an initiative. Most of these saloons also offer free haircuts or some other perks in exchange for the beautiful gift that you are providing. To add on to this you can encourage your colleagues, friends, and family to participate in this hair donation initiative along with you.

  • Hold a Garage Sale

This might seem a very tedious option at first. The question that comes up what should I sell? Just take a glance around your house and there will be so many things around the house that we no longer use and it’s just lying about. There could be clothes, which have barely been worn and will not be in the future, for whatever the reason may be. Also, you never know that there might be people as close as your neighborhood that might need the stuff that you no longer are using. Further, what you can do is have your neighbors and friends and even your colleagues join in and contribute stuff for the garage sale. The proceedings of the sale can then be shared with cancer charities.

  • Participate in a ‘Pink’ event

There are ‘Pink’ events held all over the world in support of breast cancer. Some places have Pink Marathons, some have Pink Triathlons and some have ‘Pink’ breakfasts, which are organized to raise funds for breast cancer. You can always participate in these events to help donate for such a cause. To make it more enjoyable as well as profitable at the same time, you can take your friends or family along.
